Project Barley Taps and Grill in Redondo Beach is remaining operational despite significant flooding along the boardwalk due to high tides. A video shared by the popular South Bay spot shows the business continuing to serve customers while surrounded by seawater.
The area is currently experiencing widespread flooding, with a coastal flood warning issued by the National Weather Service for Orange and San Diego counties through Thursday afternoon. Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara counties are under a coastal flood advisory.
In a social media post, Project Barley stated that flooding is a recurring issue in the area and expressed frustration with the local government's response, which they claim has been limited to providing sandbags. The business also indicated that they have been dropped by their insurance providers, despite no past claims, leading to significantly higher premiums.
"Please come support the businesses down in the boardwalk, be active in your city and make this a big deal. This is devastating for small businesses," the post urged.
Brent Reger, the owner of Project Barley, told KTLA that while the floodwaters had receded by Tuesday morning, the business's floors were "ruined." He has been advocating for the city to replace a wooden retaining wall along the boardwalk with a concrete structure, but city officials reportedly cite a lack of funds.
Project Barley operates several other establishments, including the neighboring Next Door bar and Project Barley Brewery and Pizzeria in Lomita.
Officials are warning that further rainfall is expected across Southern California from Friday through Halloween weekend.
