Socialite Zana Pali has delivered a scathing critique of Victoria's Labor government, asserting that former premier Jacinta Allan "killed our state" and that the city of Melbourne has lost its former vibrancy due to rising crime, economic struggles, and an escalating cost of living.
Pali, a former reality television personality, shared her views on the podcast "The Debrief with Savanna Young," painting a grim picture of Melbourne. She dismissed claims that the city's nightlife still surpasses Sydney's, stating, "Melbourne's dead. There is no vibe in Melbourne. It's actually depressing. In Melbourne, the restaurants are empty. People aren't going out."
Citing crime as a major concern, Pali alleged that "the crime is out of control" and that residents "can't leave the house without a machete attack or something happening." She also claimed that repeat offenders face little deterrence due to a "revolving door" system where individuals are released on bail, leading to a lack of consequences. Pali asserted that families no longer feel safe allowing their children to be outdoors in public, referencing incidents of violence in affluent bayside suburbs.
Drawing on her background as a criminal lawyer, Pali argued that government policies have contributed to Victoria's economic difficulties, leading to a loss of investor confidence and an increased burden on taxpayers. "Everyone's broke. Our state is broke. Our government has made us broke," she stated, expressing a sentiment of hopelessness for the state's future.
Pali indicated she would support any candidate in the next election as long as they were not affiliated with the Labor party. She has reportedly discussed her concerns with political figures, including One Nation leader Pauline Hanson and Victorian Opposition Leader Jess Wilson.
Her comments come in the wake of a leadership change within Victoria's Labor government, where Jacinta Allan was replaced as Premier by Ben Carroll. Recent polling in Victoria shows the Coalition leading Labor on primary votes, with One Nation also showing support in the state.
