Socialist Streamer Hasan Piker Faces Backlash for Pressuring Texas Senate Nominee James Talarico
Piker's call for Talarico to govern as a leftist if elected has drawn sharp criticism from Republican figures, who argue it reveals the candidate's potential allegiances.
Far-left streamer Hasan Piker is facing online criticism after urging Texas Senate nominee James Talarico to govern as a leftist if elected in the upcoming midterms. Piker, speaking at the University of Texas at Austin, stated his expectation that Talarico, if he wins, should "play ball" and not become a "do nothing Democrat." He added, "We've got to make sure that he doesn’t become another, ‘do nothing Democrat’ ‘business as usual,’ and we've got to keep up that pressure."
Talarico, running to be the first Democrat to win a Texas Senate seat in over three decades, has publicly moderated some of his past stances while campaigning on a more centrist platform. Despite this shift, Piker's remarks have been seized upon by Republicans.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, Talarico's opponent, responded on social media, asserting that Talarico is "bought and paid for by the Democratic Socialists" and that his election would lead to increased taxes and a "radical agenda" at the expense of Texans. Senator Ted Cruz also commented, stating, "When they tell you who they are…believe them."
Rep. Brandon Gill of Texas echoed these sentiments, calling Talarico "nothing more than a puppet of the radical left." Political analyst Guy Benson highlighted Piker's past controversial statements, including one where he allegedly said "America deserved 9/11," to underscore the potential pressure Talarico might face from the left flank of the Democratic party.
Others on social media have dismissed Piker's comments as irrelevant to Talarico's campaign. One user argued that Talarico's success is due to his "morals, policies and his hard working team’s outreach to the people of Texas," and that Piker has "nothing to do with Talarico’s campaign." Another commenter stated Talarico "doesn’t owe DSA anything" and will represent Texans, not "California Socialists like Hasan."
Piker's influence has grown in progressive circles, notably through his association with Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. However, Piker's controversial statements have led to some Democrats distancing themselves from him.
Throughout his campaign, Talarico has addressed and sometimes backtracked on past controversial statements, such as claiming "God is non-binary," stating he "missed the mark." He continues to support progressive policies like universal healthcare, which he attributes to "biblical grounds."
