Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), has defeated establishment-backed candidate Alexander Vindman in a U.S. Senate primary race.
Nixon secured victory despite Vindman's campaign war chest of approximately $16.3 million, significantly outspending Nixon's roughly $1 million budget. The win marks another instance of a DSA-affiliated candidate challenging and defeating the preferred candidates of the Democratic Party establishment.
Nixon gained prominence in the Florida Legislature for her protests against a redistricting bill championed by Gov. Ron DeSantis. In April 2022, Nixon disrupted a final vote on the bill on the Florida House floor, shouting through a bullhorn that the measure was unconstitutional and illegal. Despite her protest, the bill passed the House with an 83-28 vote.
Following the protest, Nixon was arrested for refusing to leave DeSantis' office while demonstrating against the redistricting measure, though she was released shortly after. Nixon has publicly identified herself as a DSA member and has been vocal on various social and political issues.
Nixon's platform, as stated on her campaign website, includes advocating for a "working families guarantee." This platform encompasses policies such as Medicare for all, free childcare, a national rent freeze, a moratorium on evictions, and a universal jobs program with inflation-adjusted wages. She proposes funding these initiatives by taxing billionaires and reallocating funds from military spending.
Regarding immigration, Nixon has called for abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and rebuilding the agency's functions with a focus on humanitarian principles, stating that "no person is illegal." On policing, her proposals include demilitarizing law enforcement and investing in community-based public safety initiatives.
Nixon has also expressed strong opinions on foreign policy, stating that the U.S. has "fueled the genocide in Palestine." She has also publicly objected to resolutions honoring conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, whom she accused of making hateful statements about Black people and of holding homophobic, antisemitic, and misogynistic views.
