Social Security recipients are projected to receive a 3.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in 2027, marking the highest increase in three years, according to the Senior Citizens League (TSCL). This non-partisan advocacy group, known for its accurate COLA forecasts, anticipates this boost to help beneficiaries keep pace with rising prices.
The projected 3.5% increase is slightly lower than TSCL's previous forecast of 3.6% and 0.7 percentage points higher than the 2.8% COLA for 2026. The official announcement of the COLA for 2027 is expected on October 14.
The average monthly Social Security benefit currently stands at approximately $2,071. A 3.5% COLA would increase this amount by about $72.49, bringing the average monthly benefit to around $2,143.
Married couples receiving Social Security could see a more substantial increase. With an estimated average combined monthly benefit of $3,208, a 3.5% COLA would add approximately $112.28 per month, raising their total to about $3,320.
Recipients will receive personalized benefit notices in December detailing their scheduled payments starting in January 2027. Those with a my Social Security account may access this information online before the paper notice arrives, with deductions for Medicare already factored in.
Looking beyond the COLA, efforts to strengthen Social Security's long-term financial stability are ongoing. The Social Security 2100 Act, reintroduced in Congress, aims to enhance benefits and adjust the COLA calculation. If passed, this bill could increase benefits by 2%, set the minimum benefit at 125% of the federal poverty line, and shift the COLA calculation from the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) to the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-E), a measure more tailored to seniors' expenses.
The proposed legislation also includes a provision to extend Social Security's payroll tax to cover income over $400,000. This measure is intended to help secure the program's trust fund, which is projected to be depleted by late 2032.
