Social Security Payments Poised to Surpass $2,000 Milestone in 2027
An estimated 3.5% cost-of-living adjustment could bring the average monthly benefit to over $2,000, according to preliminary projections.
Social Security and Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries are anticipating a notable increase in their monthly payments for 2027. Preliminary estimates suggest the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) could reach 3.5%, potentially pushing the average monthly Social Security benefit past the $2,000 mark for the first time.
The Social Security Administration is scheduled to announce the official 2027 COLA on October 14. This figure is determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics' release of September's Consumer Price Index (CPI), which tracks average price changes for urban wage earners and clerical workers. The COLA is designed to help Social Security benefits keep pace with inflation and rising living expenses.
The Senior Citizens League, an advocacy group, has projected the 2027 COLA at 3.5%. If this estimate holds, the average monthly benefit would increase by approximately $67.90, rising from $1,940.08 to $2,007.98. This projected increase is slightly lower than a previous estimate from the organization but remains higher than the 2.8% adjustment in 2026 and the 2.5% adjustment in 2025.
"The biggest thing we’re watching with the COLA announcement coming are short-term shocks to the economy that push inflation way up or down in the next 30 days," said Shannon Benton, TSCL executive director.
For the first time, AARP has released an advance COLA forecast to provide beneficiaries with more time to adjust their budgets. Rich Johnson, vice president for financial security at the AARP Public Policy Institute, noted that early projections are particularly helpful for families managing strained finances due to persistent price increases.
A survey conducted by the Nationwide Retirement Institute revealed that 74% of Social Security recipients have altered their financial habits because inflation has outpaced benefit gains. Among those surveyed, 51% reported reducing discretionary spending, and 38% have cut back on essential purchases such as groceries and prescription medications.
The payment schedule for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits will also see adjustments between October 2026 and January 2027. SSI payments will be issued on Thursday, October 1, and again on Friday, October 30. This means beneficiaries will receive two payments in October and none in November, as November 1 falls on a Sunday. A similar shift will occur in December, with the January 1, 2027, payment being distributed early due to the New Year's Day holiday.
