The Social Security Administration (SSA) will issue the final round of July payments this week, with checks scheduled to arrive on Wednesday, July 22, for recipients whose birthdays fall between the 21st and the end of the month.
These standard monthly payments are distributed on a staggered schedule based on a recipient's birth date. Those born in the latter third of any month typically receive their benefits on the fourth Wednesday of the month. The SSA issued the first wave of July payments during the second week of the month, followed by a second round on July 15.
This staggered schedule does not apply to individuals who began receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997 or to those who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). These recipients are paid on the third day of each month, unless that day falls on a weekend or holiday. SSI-only payments are disbursed on the first day of the month, regardless of birth date.
Individuals who do not receive their expected payment on time are advised by the SSA to wait three mailing days before contacting the agency. Following the July 22 distribution, the next scheduled payments include an early August SSI payment on July 31, followed by Social Security retirement benefits for August, distributed on August 12, August 19, and August 26, based on birth dates.
The future of Social Security benefits is a subject of ongoing debate in Congress. Projections indicate a potential 28% benefit cut by 2032. One recent proposal suggests capping annual benefits at $100,000.
The maximum monthly payout for Social Security retirement benefits in 2026 is set at $5,181. To qualify for this top payout, individuals must meet specific criteria: work for at least 35 years, earn at or above the Social Security taxable maximum ($184,500 cap in 2026) during their 35 highest-earning years, and delay claiming benefits until age 70.
For individuals who earned less than the taxable maximum throughout their careers, the final benefit amount will likely be lower. For those who file for retirement benefits in 2026 at younger ages, the payouts differ: $2,969 for those starting benefits at age 62, and $4,152 for those filing at their full retirement age (66 and 10 months for those born in 1959, and 67 for individuals born in 1960 or later).
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments for the remainder of 2026 are scheduled for August 31, September 30, October 30, November 29, and December 31.
