SNP Government Faces Scrutiny Over £120,000 Spent on Sending Scottish Students to Irish Universities

The Scottish National Party (SNP) government has allocated over £120,000 since the 2020-21 academic year to assist Scottish students with tuition fees at universities in the Republic of Ireland. This spending has drawn criticism amid ongoing concerns that Scottish students are being crowded out of places at domestic institutions.

A total of 144,008 euros, equivalent to just over £120,000, has been spent on contributions toward fees for Scottish-domiciled students pursuing approved undergraduate degrees at specified higher education institutions in Ireland. Tertiary Education Minister Alyn Smith confirmed that the Student Awards Agency Scotland covers these fees for eligible students.

Tim Eagle, a Scottish Conservative MSP for the Highlands and Islands region, expressed bewilderment at the expenditure. He stated that taxpayers would likely find it baffling that the SNP government has spent significant sums to facilitate study in Ireland rather than increasing capacity at Scottish universities.

The figures were disclosed following a written parliamentary question submitted by Mr. Eagle. The controversy arises as several Scottish universities reported having no or very limited places for Scottish students during the recent Clearing process, while simultaneously advertising for fee-paying students from other parts of the UK and abroad. This situation has fueled concerns that Scottish students may be missing equitable opportunities due to the SNP's policies on tuition fees and university funding.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Government refuted any link between this funding and the availability of places in Scotland. The government stated that a small number of students have utilized the Irish Government's Free Fees Initiative with agency funding, and any assertion that this impacts the number of places at Scottish universities is incorrect.
