SNL Writer Reveals Secret Behind Jalen Brunson's Memorable Skit

During his highly anticipated hosting debut on "Saturday Night Live," New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson featured in a skit titled "Office MVP." The sketch centered on his character, Darius, repeatedly attempting to make a shot into a trash can, culminating in a successful attempt that drew cheers from his colleagues and the live studio audience.
According to SNL writer Dan Bulla, the skit's climax involved a deliberate challenge. Bulla shared on Instagram that a blower was placed inside the trash can, making it virtually impossible for Brunson to score until the final, on-air attempt. Bulla noted that they had prepared two sets of cue cards for the ending—one for a successful shot and one for a miss. Brunson missed the shot during the dress rehearsal but succeeded during the live broadcast.
The skit's dramatic ending mirrored the Knicks' recent championship run, their first since 1973. Brunson's monologue also paid tribute to the team, with appearances by his starting five teammates: Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, and Josh Hart. Additionally, SNL cast member Kenan Thompson portrayed ESPN's Stephen A. Smith, issuing an apology for earlier doubts about Brunson's capabilities.
With his hosting gig, Brunson became the fifth NBA player to host "Saturday Night Live," joining an elite group that includes Bill Russell, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, and LeBron James. He was also the first player from the New York Knicks to host the show. The Knicks are set to begin their 2026-27 season on October 20 at Madison Square Garden against the Philadelphia 76ers.
