Slow Jogging for Ten Minutes Can Boost Mood and Cognitive Function, Study Finds
New research from Japan suggests a gentle run just above walking pace can enhance brain activity and happiness.
Engaging in very slow running for as little as ten minutes can lead to improved mood and faster thinking, according to a study from the University of Tsukuba in Japan. The research indicates that these cognitive and emotional benefits can be achieved even at a low exercise intensity.
A group of 24 healthy young adults participated in the study, running on a treadmill for ten minutes at a speed of 3 to 6 kilometers per hour (approximately 2 to 4 miles per hour). This pace corresponds to about 35 percent of their peak oxygen uptake, a level considered very light exercise intensity. For comparison, participants also completed a control session without any physical activity.
Researchers monitored brain activity, specifically in the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for executive functions like thinking, emotional regulation, and behavior. They used a device to track changes in oxygen-rich blood flow to this brain region. The study observed an increase in activity within the prefrontal cortex following the slow jogging sessions.
Cognitive function was assessed using the Stroop effect, a test that measures reaction time when identifying the color of ink used to print a word, especially when the word itself names a different color. Participants who engaged in slow running demonstrated a reduced 'interference' time in the Stroop test, suggesting enhanced brain processing speed.
Furthermore, participants reported feeling happier after the exercise. The study authors noted a potential link between the head's vertical movement during slow running and these mood improvements. They suggested that this mechanism might contribute to the mental health benefits of very slow running and encouraged physical and mental activity through this accessible form of exercise.
