‘Slow Horses’ Season 6 Finale Features Heroic Sacrifice and a Book Departure
The latest season of the Apple TV+ spy thriller concludes with a pivotal character's death, diverging from its literary source material.
The sixth season of Apple TV+'s spy drama "Slow Horses" culminated in a dramatic and heartbreaking death in its finale episode, "Judgment Day." Emma Flyte, a crucial member of the Slough House team since Season 4, met her end in a heroic sacrifice during a violent shootout, a departure from the original novel.
During an intense confrontation at a safe house, Flyte, alongside other agents, attempted to escape an attack by mercenaries. As the team sought cover on a beach, Flyte engaged the enemy, successfully taking down one hitman. However, she was ultimately shot by the antagonist Harkness. Before succumbing to her wounds, she managed to wound Harkness, ensuring she fought to the very end. Her final moments saw her standing against the attackers to protect her colleagues.
Flyte's death marks the latest in a series of significant character losses throughout the show's run, which has consistently followed Mick Herron's book series in its willingness to kill off core characters. Previous departures include David Cartwright in Season 6's premiere, J.K. Coe in Episode 4, and Kyle Soller's assassin Jim in Episode 5. The series has also previously seen the apparent death and return of Sid Baker and the confirmed deaths of Min Harper and Marcus Longridge in earlier seasons.
Showrunner Gaby Chiappe explained the decision to alter Flyte's death from the book, stating that the adaptation merged two novels, necessitating changes for narrative cohesion. "She loses her life in the same way that she does in the original, in that she’s protecting other people," Chiappe told TV Insider. "So the heroism of that moment isn’t lost and it feels more weighty where everybody was on the chessboard at the end. It felt the most weighty thing would be Frank to kill her."
Ruth Bradley, who portrayed Flyte, reflected on her character's exit, noting that she spent the remainder of her time on set filming her character's final scene as a corpse. Her performance as Flyte, particularly her nuanced portrayal in Season 6, had earned her praise, and her dynamic with Roddy Ho (Christopher Chung) was a particular highlight. Ho’s somber reaction to finding Flyte, encapsulated in his line, "What a legend. Bird takes flight," underscored the impact of her loss.
The season finale also left the fate of River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) uncertain, adding further suspense for viewers. "Slow Horses" Season 6 is now available for streaming on Apple TV+.
