Slow Horses Season 6 Cliffhanger: River Cartwright's Fate Uncertain
The season finale of Apple TV+'s spy drama "Slow Horses" ends with a potentially fatal poisoning, leaving the fate of lead character River Cartwright in question.
The sixth season of Apple TV+'s spy drama "Slow Horses" concluded with a dramatic finale that featured intense action, significant losses, and a cliffhanger potentially involving the death of fan-favorite character River Cartwright. The episode, titled "Judgment Day," saw Jackson Lamb and his team of MI5 agents on the run from Russian assassins and River's estranged father, Frank Harkness, after a botched retaliation plan orchestrated by Taverner.
The Finale's Twists and Turns
The episode opened with Russian assassin Jane tending to her wounds and resuming her mission, fueled by a desire for revenge for the death of her partner, Jim. Meanwhile, River, after letting Sid escape, was left by his captors. He contacted Lamb to inform him of Taverner's attempt to hand Sid over to Russian intelligence and the death of Coe. Lamb urged River to help the rest of the Slough House team, who were holed up at Taverner's holiday house with Reece.
Lamb confronted Taverner, revealing that the money she took from Damien Cantor was Russian rubles and that Cantor was attempting to eliminate anyone who could prove his connection to Natasha Carrington. Lamb explained that the Russians were targeting those they believed responsible for an operation in Kazan, and Lamb's agents were caught in the crossfire. Taverner admitted she was compromised and planned to confess treason, but Lamb insisted she focus on saving his agents first.
As Harkness and his mercenaries prepared to attack the safe house, Lamb intervened at a birthday party for Natasha's daughter. He proposed a deal: Natasha could provide Moscow with the mastermind behind the Kazan operation to divert attention. While this played out, the Slough House agents inside the house faced an assault. After a fierce fight, some agents escaped to a nearby beach, while others, including River, took cover elsewhere.
During the chaotic escape, Emma Flyte was fatally shot by Harkness. Louisa was also wounded by the returning assassin Jane. Shirley attempted to secure an escape route and found a weapon, but Ho disappeared. Reece, taught to shoot by Shirley, managed to kill one of Harkness's men with a spear.
Lamb's Plan and Cantor's Fate
Meanwhile, Taverner met with Cantor, warning him that Lamb knew about the Russian money funding his operation and was seeking retribution. She arranged for Cantor to escape via a waiting plane, offering him multiple destination options.
However, Lamb intercepted Cantor, driving him to the airfield himself. To protect Sid, Lamb designated Cantor as the double-agent mastermind behind the Kazan operation. Before being taken away, Cantor ordered Harkness to abort his mission.
Harkness, despite being wounded by Flyte, returned to the safe house. He was confronted by River, who had been fighting Jane. Harkness killed Jane and then had a tense, brief exchange with River, his father, before letting him go as an MI5 helicopter arrived.
Taverner, having successfully framed Peter Judd, faced no repercussions. The surviving Slow Horses reconvened at their usual haunt to honor their fallen colleagues, particularly Coe. Standish mentioned that River's grandfather's neighbor had noticed a light on in his house for several days, leading River to understand that Sid had left a light on for him.
A Poisonous Cliffhanger
River found Sid at the house, and as he prepared wine, he began to struggle, experiencing difficulty breathing. He collapsed before he could call for help, with his boot the last thing seen on screen. A preview for Season 7, which made reference to River's death and did not show actor Jack Lowden, has left viewers questioning his survival.
Based on the book series by Mick Herron, it is understood that River was poisoned by a Russian nerve agent. The poison likely transferred to his hand when he handled a crowbar at David's house, suggesting it may have been planted by Jim or Jane. Whether the poison was intended for River, Sid, or both remains unclear.
While book storylines can differ from screen adaptations, Book 8 of the series, "Bad Actors," reportedly sees River survive the poisoning, offering a glimmer of hope for fans of the show.
