Slain Pregnant Mother's Parents Demand Suspect Husband's Extradition from Italy

The parents of Christa Bauer Gilley, a pregnant Texas mother found dead in her home in October 2024, have publicly called for her husband, Lee Gilley, to be extradited from Italy to face murder charges.

Ed and Sharon Bauer, Christa's parents, expressed their anguish and their pursuit of accountability in a recent op-ed published in The Wall Street Journal. "We didn’t have time to grieve before legal battles began. What’s kept us going is faith that we would see accountability for the precious lives taken from us," they wrote.

Lee Gilley, accused of killing his wife and their unborn child, allegedly cut off his ankle monitor and fled to Italy in May, weeks before his trial was scheduled to begin. His attorney, Dick DeGuerin, noted that Gilley's flight could be used as evidence of consciousness of guilt in the Houston case.

An extradition process has been complicated by the fact that Italian courts are hesitant to return Gilley to the U.S. if he faces the death penalty, a practice abolished in Italy. Texas prosecutors have since removed the death penalty from consideration in the case. Despite this, Gilley appeared in court in Italy on Wednesday, but no decision was made regarding his extradition.

The Bauer family has stated that they do not seek Lee Gilley's death, aligning with their Roman Catholic beliefs about the sanctity of life. "We don’t believe justice for Christa involves taking another life. For us, justice means improving the well-being of women like her. It means confronting the global problem of violence against women," they stated in their op-ed. They are urging Italian and U.S. authorities to collaborate to facilitate the extradition.

Lee Gilley's Texas attorney has maintained his client's innocence, asserting that Christa Bauer Gilley's death was caused by a pre-existing medical condition.

A preliminary hearing for Gilley is scheduled for Friday, October 9. He is currently being held in a jail cell in Turin, Italy.
