Slain Philadelphia Officer Was Father of Two, Colleague Critically Injured in Ambush

A Philadelphia police officer killed in what authorities described as a "brutal, senseless, horrific" ambush early Saturday was a married father of two young children. Officer Shane Seiber, 40, died in the hospital after being shot three times while responding to a report of an armed man on a porch in West Philadelphia.

Seiber's partner, who has five children, was shot 12 times and remains in stable condition, according to Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel. "He's not out of the woods yet," Bethel stated.

The shooting occurred shortly after midnight on the 100 block of North 52nd Street. Police described the incident as an ambush. After the initial shooting, the suspected gunman fled down an alley and then opened fire on nine additional responding officers, none of whom were struck, District Attorney Larry Krasner reported.

Eric Lewis, 35, was apprehended hours later, reportedly found hiding in a tree. Krasner announced that Lewis faces approximately 80 charges, including murder and 10 counts of attempted murder.
