Slack and Away Founders Sell Aspen Mansion for $30 Million Post-Split

Slack co-founder Stewart Butterfield and Away co-founder Jen Rubio have sold their six-bedroom Aspen estate for $30 million. The sale of the Colorado mansion occurred earlier this month, approximately weeks after the pair announced their separation.

The property, located at 864 Moore Drive in Aspen’s Five Trees neighborhood, was purchased by David and Erika Sands through a special warranty deed. The buyers are reportedly former professional poker players David “Doc” Sands and Erika Moutinho Sands.

Butterfield and Rubio acquired the estate in 2021 for $25 million. It was initially listed in June 2025 for $45 million and later reduced to $39.5 million. The property went into contract on August 14, shortly after the couple announced their split in a joint Instagram statement.

"With deep love and respect for one another, we’ve made the decision to separate," the statement read. "We are profoundly grateful for the extraordinary life we share, and we step into what comes next with optimism and light."

A spokesperson for the former couple told The Wall Street Journal that the sale was not related to their separation and that neither party plans to divest further properties. The estate, completed in 2013, spans approximately 10,600 square feet on five acres and offers views of Castle Creek Valley. It features a home theater, fitness center, bar, billiards area, wine cellar, and tasting room.

This sale is part of the couple's extensive real estate history. In 2022, they sold a Tribeca townhouse with a notable skybridge for $24 million. They also previously purchased a Manhattan townhouse for $72.5 million in 2024, owned a Southampton estate valued at $32.2 million, and a large New Mexico ranch formerly owned by fashion designer Tom Ford. In October 2022, they sold a San Francisco Victorian mansion for $19.15 million.

Butterfield co-founded Slack, which was acquired by Salesforce for $27.7 billion in 2021, the same year he and Rubio bought the Aspen property. He remained CEO until departing in 2023. Rubio co-founded Away in 2015 and currently serves as its executive chair.

Steven Shane of Compass represented the sellers, while Kendall Greiner of Douglas Elliman represented the buyers in the Aspen transaction.
