Skubal Shines in Final Start, Bolstering Dodgers' Playoff Outlook

Tarik Skubal concluded his regular-season pitching with a commanding performance, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 2-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Friday night. In his final start before the playoffs, Skubal struck out 10 batters and allowed only three hits over seven scoreless innings, issuing no walks in an exceptionally efficient outing that required just 75 pitches.

This dominant display marks a significant moment for Skubal, the Dodgers' key trade deadline acquisition, as he seems to be finding his top form. While the team acquired him from the Tigers with the expectation that he would significantly boost their World Series chances, his integration process had not been entirely seamless.

Skubal had not recorded a scoreless outing until two weeks prior against the Cincinnati Reds, where he pitched seven innings of one-run ball. He followed that performance by allowing four runs in five innings against the Giants in his previous start. The left-hander had also recently taken time away from the team to attend to a bereavement.

Friday’s game at Oracle Park, however, presented a different narrative. The Dodgers provided Skubal with an early lead in the second inning when Teoscar Hernández and Andy Pages hit consecutive home runs. Pages’ home run was his first since returning from a fractured hand.

From that point, Skubal, a Northern California native, maintained control, effectively mixing his fastball and changeup. He finished the season with an overall record of 12-7 and an earned run average of 2.72. His tenure with the Dodgers concluded with a 5-2 record and a 2.61 ERA across 10 starts, with his last four starts all resulting in wins.

During the outing, Skubal's fastball was clocked at 100 mph for the third time this season, generating 12 whiffs on 25 swings. His changeup also proved effective, eliciting seven whiffs on 14 swings from Giants hitters.

It is worth noting that the Giants were playing with a lineup largely composed of minor league players, as they conclude a disappointing season marked by struggles and injuries among their key players. Nevertheless, entering the postseason with a performance described as arguably Skubal’s most complete start of the year provides a strong boost to the Dodgers' playoff aspirations. This is the level of performance the Dodgers envisioned when they traded for Skubal, and they will be hoping it signals more to come in October.
