Skincare Influencer Advocates for Budget-Friendly Routine, Advises Against Overspending on Cleansers and Moisturizers

Skincare influencer Andrew Donaldson-Wheatcroft, known for his "no bullsh*t" approach, advises consumers to save money by avoiding expensive cleansers and moisturizers. Donaldson-Wheatcroft, who has amassed 200,000 followers, emphasizes focusing on effective ingredients rather than branding or packaging.

He states that cleansers and moisturizers primarily serve as basic steps in a routine and do not significantly transform skin. Instead, he recommends investing in products containing key ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, squalane, and polyglutamic acid. "They’re not going to transform your skin; they’re just there as bookends, the start and finish," Donaldson-Wheatcroft explained.

For cleansers, he suggests that affordable options are sufficient. He specifically recommends the L’Oreal Paris Gel Cleanser, priced around £7, as one of the best face washes he has used. For individuals with dry skin, he advises looking for cream cleansers that offer hydration and nourishment.

Donaldson-Wheatcroft also suggests that while eye creams were once debated, they can be beneficial, particularly as people age. He personally uses The Ordinary Lacto-PDRN eye cream and has observed positive results. "Eye cream is worth it if you’re getting older and want to protect your skin," he said.

Sunscreen is another crucial element of a skincare routine, regardless of weather conditions. Donaldson-Wheatcroft notes that UVA rays can damage skin even on cloudy days, leading to premature aging and hyperpigmentation. He stresses the importance of daily SPF use, stating, "If you’re putting lots of effort in the evening with your retinoids and vitamin C, you’re only undoing it by not wearing your SPF." He advises finding a sunscreen that feels comfortable and integrates seamlessly into the routine.

Donaldson-Wheatcroft recommends prioritizing spending on products like retinoids and vitamin C serums. Retinoids, which increase cell turnover, can help achieve younger-looking skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. He refers to them as "the powerhouse serum for the evening because it does everything." He also cautions users to apply SPF the following day when using retinoids due to increased skin sensitivity.

Regarding vitamin C serums, Donaldson-Wheatcroft suggests that targeted serums offer the best absorption. He highlights the Nip and Fab vitamin C serum, asserting that its results are comparable to a product costing £180.

He advocates for a pragmatic approach to skincare, ensuring that his recommendations are practical and cost-effective, reflecting his belief that quality skincare does not require excessive spending. Don't splurge on a moisturiser, said Donaldson-Wheatcroft. Retinoids are a purchase to splurge on, according to this skincare pro.
