Skeletal remains discovered in the American wilderness have been identified as a Scottish man who disappeared six years ago. John Gillies, 63, was last seen camping near Sweetwater Gap, Wyoming, approximately six years ago.
The remains were found ten months prior to the identification by forest workers, who then alerted authorities. Detectives from the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) initiated a thorough investigation to identify the deceased.
Investigators found personal effects at the site, including information that led them to Mr. Gillies, who was originally from Kirkintilloch, Scotland. To aid in identification, SCSO contacted Saint Mary’s Church in his hometown. Church officials helped locate Mr. Gillies’ surviving family in Scotland, including his ex-wife. Through Interpol and Police Scotland, DNA samples were collected from relatives.
On June 30, 2026, the SCSO announced the positive identification of the remains. According to a spokesperson, the investigation spanned two countries and involved cooperation from Interpol, Scottish law enforcement, and the Wyoming State Crime Laboratory. Confirmation from the Crime Laboratory indicated biological relation to family reference samples from Scotland, establishing the identity as John Gillies.
Later that day, investigators informed Mr. Gillies’ family of the identification. In a message to investigators, his ex-wife stated, “I wanted you to know he was more than bones.” Officials noted her compassion and assistance were invaluable.
An anthropologist had previously estimated in December that 85 percent of Mr. Gillies’ remains were recovered and had been at the site for six years. The cause of death remains unknown.
Sublette County Sheriff K.C. Lehr praised the dedication of all involved and the strength of partnerships that extended beyond local and national borders. "This case is a testament to the dedication of everyone involved and the strength of partnerships that extend well beyond our county and even our nation’s borders," Lehr said. "What began as the discovery of remains in a remote area of Wyoming ultimately brought together local, state, federal, and international partners with one shared goal – to give a family answers." He added, "We are grateful to everyone who played a role in helping bring John home."
At the family's request, the sheriff's office is now coordinating with Interpol to return Mr. Gillies’ remains to Scotland for burial.
