Police brought a busy freeway to a halt during a dramatic arrest that closed five lanes. A total of six people were arrested after two cars were stolen from a home on Clonaig Street in Brighton East, east Melbourne, about 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

The stolen vehicles, a Nissan Patrol and an Audi SQ5, were reportedly involved in another break-in approximately 30 kilometers east in Hampton Park about 7:45 a.m. No injuries were reported in either home invasion.

Victoria Police officers located the Nissan Patrol after it was seen driving erratically in Doveton, about 8 kilometers south of Hampton Park, around 8 a.m. The Police Air Wing monitored from the sky while officers pursued the car through multiple eastern and south-eastern suburbs.

The chase eventually led onto the Eastlink and Monash Freeway. Specialist police units boxed in the car on the freeway around midday, closing all five outbound lanes. Police arrested six individuals from inside the vehicle: four teenage boys aged 16 and 17, and two adults aged 19 and 20. They were taken to Dandenong Police Station for interviews. No charges had been laid as of Tuesday night.

Footage from the scene showed tactical officers wrestling the group to the ground and placing them in waiting police cars. In a notable discovery, one officer was seen retrieving what appeared to be a large sword in a red cover from the stolen vehicle.

The second stolen vehicle, the Audi SQ5, was later found in Endeavour Hills, approximately 30 kilometers from its original location in Brighton East.

Authorities believe the group broke into the first home through a side door while the family, including a toddler, was asleep. In the second incident, masked individuals reportedly kicked down the front door and entered the residence while a cousin of the homeowner was present.

Victoria Police are appealing for information and urge anyone who witnessed the incidents or has relevant footage to contact Crime Stoppers.
