A six-year-old boy died from injuries sustained when a large driftwood log collapsed on him at Little Squalicum Beach in Bellingham, Washington.

Killian Gonzales was playing near a fort constructed from driftwood logs on July 8 when one of the timbers unexpectedly shifted and fell, pinning the child. Emergency crews and bystanders attempted to free the boy. Paramedics worked for approximately 20 minutes to revive Gonzales, performing CPR before his pulse was restored. He was transported to St. Joseph Medical Center and then to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for specialized treatment.

Despite extensive surgeries and intensive care, Killian succumbed to his injuries on Sunday. His injuries included multiple skull fractures, a broken nose, and a collapsed lung. A neurosurgeon informed the family that Killian had suffered multiple strokes and showed signs of dead brain tissue. Surgeons performed emergency brain surgery, removing a portion of his skull to alleviate swelling.

Investigators from the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office and Bellingham Police Department determined there was no evidence of foul play, concluding the incident was a tragic accident. Killian had recently completed kindergarten and was anticipating starting first grade.

Killian had only just completed kindergarten at Alderwood Elementary School and was looking forward to enjoying his summer break before starting first grade

Killian’s mother, Sonja McCartney, described him as an adventurous, curious, and compassionate child. A GoFundMe campaign established by a family friend has raised over $63,000 to assist the family with expenses and allow them time to grieve. A candlelight vigil was scheduled for Monday evening at Squalicum Creek Park to honor Killian's life.
