Six Nigerian nationals accused of involvement in romance scams are set to be extradited to the United States to face charges. South African police confirmed that the individuals will face wire fraud and money laundering charges in the U.S. .
The arrests are part of ongoing international efforts targeting the Black Axe syndicate, a criminal network known for its extreme violence and operations spanning Africa, Europe, and North America. A 2021 BBC Eye investigation described Black Axe as one of the world's most far-reaching and dangerous organized crime groups, with Nigeria serving as its primary recruitment ground. Many of its members are university-educated and are reportedly inducted during their schooling.
The group has been under scrutiny by law enforcement agencies for years. The FBI initiated operations against Black Axe in November 2019 and September 2021, leading to charges against more than 35 individuals for multi-million dollar internet fraud schemes. Subsequent operations across multiple countries, coordinated by Interpol, have also targeted the syndicate.
In a recent operation between November 2025 and June 2026, Interpol reported that seven sites in South Africa linked to a syndicate involved in romance and investment scams were raided. This operation resulted in the arrest of 39 people, the seizure of money, and the blocking of over 250 bank accounts.
