Six German Shepherd puppies have been welcomed into the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) Tactical Dog Unit. The eight-week-old female pups, named Stormy, Sylvie, Gracie, Rosie, Skye, and Jet, are all descendants of Jax, a German Shepherd who served with GMP for eight years before retiring last year.
The puppies have each been assigned a handler and will begin a 13-week training course to become operational police dogs in over a year. During this time, they will focus on bonding with their handlers, learning new skills, and observing experienced police dogs.
Once their training is complete, these six pups will join GMP's ranks, following in the footsteps of Jax's other offspring, PD Harley and PD Hully, who are already serving the force. In the past year, GMP's German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois dogs have assisted in approximately 536 arrests.
Inspector Mike Weeden of GMP expressed enthusiasm for the new recruits, stating, "We are absolutely delighted to welcome six new puppies to the GMP Tactical Dog Unit family." He added, "These young dogs represent the future of our unit and will begin an exciting journey towards becoming operational police dogs, helping us to prevent and detect crime across Greater Manchester." Weeden also highlighted the significance of the puppies' lineage, noting, "What makes this arrival even more special is that they come from our own retired Police Dog Jax, and it is fantastic to know that we are continuing to develop and preserve such strong and proven bloodlines within our unit."
He further described the Tactical Dog Unit as "an exciting and highly effective part of policing," emphasizing the collaborative effort between dogs and handlers to protect communities, locate offenders, safeguard vulnerable individuals, and support frontline policing. "We look forward to watching these puppies develop over the coming months and years and seeing them become the next generation of police dogs serving the people of Greater Manchester," Weeden concluded.
