Six Flags Roller Coaster Death Prompts Safety Questions as Multiple Rides Closed

A fatal roller coaster incident at Six Flags Over Georgia is prompting inquiries into ride safety and potential liability as investigators work to determine how a rider was ejected from the Goliath attraction. Following the death on Monday, Six Flags temporarily closed nine similar roller coasters across North America while police and state ride inspectors investigate.

Mark Lopez-Trigo, a Florida personal injury attorney, told Fox News Digital that the investigation will likely focus on whether the incident was an isolated event or indicative of issues with the ride's safety equipment, maintenance, or inspection protocols. "What led to this incident, whether it be isolated or system-wide? Was it a failure in the system itself?" Lopez-Trigo stated.

The Goliath roller coaster, the park's tallest with a 200-foot first hill, does not invert riders and utilizes lap bars rather than over-the-shoulder restraints. Investigators may examine the ride's restraint system and scrutinize whether maintenance and inspections were conducted properly leading up to the accident.

Lopez-Trigo emphasized that the investigation is in its early stages and the cause remains undetermined. He suggested that the closure of similar rides could help focus theories of liability, but cautioned that the closures alone do not confirm a widespread safety problem. "It tells us where to focus theories of liability," he said.

Potential legal actions for the victim's family could include a wrongful-death claim, while injured guests might pursue personal injury claims, depending on the specifics of the incident. Lopez-Trigo noted that the process of determining fault would likely be similar for all parties seeking justice.

"While justice might mean different things to the different parties, the path to getting that justice is probably gonna look similar in terms of finding some of the answers as to how this happened," he said. The decision by Six Flags to close nine other roller coasters suggests the company itself is still seeking to understand the cause. "Six Flags' decision to temporarily close nine other roller coasters across six parks tells you that the company itself does not yet know what caused this," Lopez-Trigo added.

Determining the cause is crucial not only for potential civil claims but also for identifying necessary safety improvements. "When we've dealt with cases like this in the past, it was always extremely important to find out what happened," Lopez-Trigo said, adding that uncovering the facts can help prevent similar incidents.

The investigation is ongoing, and no official cause has been announced. Six Flags had not immediately responded to requests for comment.
