Sit-ups and Planks Ineffective for Belly Fat Loss, Experts Say

Traditional core exercises like sit-ups and planks are largely ineffective for reducing stubborn belly fat and may even pose health risks, according to fitness experts. These exercises, often promoted on social media for quick results, primarily target a small group of muscles, leading to minimal fat burning and a low impact on overall muscle tone. Moreover, sit-ups can compress spinal discs and strain the neck, potentially causing pain, particularly for individuals with conditions like diastasis recti, which can be exacerbated by these movements.

Scientific studies have largely supported these claims. A 2022 analysis of 13 studies by international researchers concluded that targeting specific muscle groups for fat burning yields virtually no difference in body fat levels in that area. Earlier research in 2011 from U.S. universities followed participants performing rigorous abdominal exercises for six weeks, finding little to no reduction in belly fat. More recent findings from the University of Aberdeen indicated that resistance exercises like planks and crunches were less effective for reducing abdominal fat compared to aerobic activities such as running and cycling.

Personal trainer Lucy Wyndham-Read, with nearly 3 million YouTube subscribers, recommends a shift towards 'standing cardio' exercises for more effective belly fat reduction. She states that standing exercises engage more muscle groups, leading to increased calorie burn and toning simultaneously, while also improving balance and flexibility. Examples of effective standing exercises include 'pretend boxing,' which involves twisting through the waist while maintaining a stable lower body to engage oblique muscles, and straight leg kicks, which activate the core.

Wyndham-Read suggests incorporating five different standing cardio exercises into a daily five-minute routine. She also emphasizes the importance of regular cardiovascular activity, such as running or cycling, to elevate heart rate and further aid fat loss. Consistency with these routines is key to seeing results within a few weeks.

Beyond targeted exercises, Wyndham-Read highlights the significant role of a balanced, calorie-controlled diet and daily walking in achieving a toned physique. She advocates for portion control, preparing home-cooked meals, and maintaining a healthy eating pattern where approximately 80% of food choices are nutritious, allowing for 20% of indulgences. A sustainable approach, she notes, is more crucial than strict deprivation for long-term success. This holistic approach, combining effective exercise with mindful eating, offers a more realistic and beneficial path to reducing belly fat and improving overall fitness.
