Two sisters from Utah experienced a startling discovery when they checked into an Airbnb rental in Oceanside, California, and found a framed beach photograph on the wall that featured members of their own family. The incident, which occurred in early July while they were celebrating their grandfather's 80th birthday with approximately 30 relatives, quickly gained viral attention on social media.
Libby Birrell, 19, and Aubrey Birrell, 26, told Fox News Digital that their initial reaction to seeing the photo was one of unease and confusion. "The first time we were sleeping, I will say we were creeped out," Aubrey Birrell stated. "It felt really strange. Did they know we were coming? We were just feeling a little confused, a little eerie, but also it was just shocking."
Their father was the first to notice the resemblance, pointing out that the man in the photograph appeared to be him. Upon closer inspection, the sisters identified themselves and another sibling, Brady, in the image, appearing as they did about ten years prior. "We have those swimsuits. We remember the time. We're pretty confident," Libby Birrell said, noting they believe the photo was taken during a family trip to Mission Beach or Imperial Beach around a decade ago.
The sisters inquired with the rental host, who explained that the home's interior decorator is a San Diego-based photographer specializing in aerial beach photography. The photographer enlarges these images for use as artwork in vacation rentals. This explanation helped resolve the mystery, though some social media users drew comparisons to horror movie scenarios.
The viral video prompted a range of reactions online, with some users sharing similar, albeit less unsettling, experiences of finding personal items or familiar imagery in unexpected places. Others suggested the sisters should leave the rental, likening the situation to the beginning of a horror film.
Despite the initial creepiness, the sisters have since found amusement in the situation. The host offered them a print of the beach photograph, which Aubrey Birrell said would be a cool memento. "I think it's fun," she added, suggesting that future guests might also seek out the picture.
