Two sisters, Kitty Mia Diaz, 21, and Amaya Cookie Diaz, 19, have been arrested in connection with the stabbing death of Caroline Peña, 32, a mother of five, in Del Rio, Texas. Police responded to Val Verde Regional Medical Center on Thursday around 2:10 p.m. after Peña arrived with multiple stab wounds. She was subsequently transported to a San Antonio medical facility for surgery, where she died later that evening.
Investigators identified the suspects using witness accounts and surveillance footage from the scene of the stabbing. Videos showed the Diaz sisters being handcuffed and placed into patrol cars. Reports indicated that both sisters appeared to smirk as they were taken into custody, with one glancing at the camera. A woman, identifying herself as the sisters' mother, confronted a bystander recording the arrests and asked them to stop filming.
Kyandra Renee Faz, 21, was also arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing. All three suspects have been charged with murder and are being held at the GEO Correctional Facility. Authorities have stated that additional charges may be filed as the investigation progresses.
The motive for the attack remains unclear. Friends of Peña described the incident as occurring on a busy road in broad daylight. Zelina Ochoa, a friend of Peña, stated that videos of the assault, which have since been removed, circulated online and showed Peña surrounded by three women.
Friends of Peña remembered her as a selfless individual who was always willing to help others, even while raising her five children. Lupita Garza, another friend, described Peña as caring and someone who brought light to those around her. Christina Salinas, Peña's best friend, was with her the night before the incident and mentioned missing a call from her shortly before the stabbing.
Peña's eldest son is reportedly 17 years old and nearing graduation. Friends expressed grief over the loss of Peña, emphasizing the impact on her children who are now without their mother.
The Del Rio Police Department is seeking additional information from anyone who may have knowledge of the incident. The Daily Mail has contacted the Del Rio Police Department for comment.
