Sister of Shooting Victim Makes Plea for Aid as Man Faces Long Recovery
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Zachary Uchtman, who was one of four injured in a pub shooting that left a 19-year-old dead.
Amy Uchtman, the twin sister of Zachary Uchtman, 27, has made an emotional appeal for community support as her brother begins a challenging recovery following a shooting outside Fitzy's Hotel in Loganholme, Queensland.
Zachary Uchtman was among four people injured when gunmen opened fire on October 24 during a boxing event. One of the injured, 19-year-old Vana-Reese Schuster-Togiatau, died from her injuries. Mr. Uchtman sustained gunshot wounds and faces a significant physical and emotional recovery period.
"His world was turned upside down that night when he was shot," Amy Uchtman wrote on a GoFundMe page established to help her brother. "In seconds, everything changed, not just physically but mentally and emotionally."
She described her brother as "brave and incredibly strong" but acknowledged the difficult journey ahead. The funds raised are intended to alleviate financial burdens during his recovery, aiming to help him become "healthy, happy and back on his feet."
More than 100 people, including families, were present at Fitzy's Hotel for the Logan City Titles boxing event when two individuals wearing balaclavas opened fire from a silver Mitsubishi ASX. At least six bullets were fired into the crowd. Mr. Uchtman was one of three men wounded in the attack.
The vehicle used by the assailants was later found burned out in Waterford West. Police believe at least three individuals were involved and fled in a separate vehicle. The investigation is being assisted by Taskforce Maxima, a specialist unit focused on outlaw motorcycle gangs and organized crime.
Detective Inspector Ian Galpin described the perpetrators as "cowardly" and appealed to the public for information, emphasizing that the 19-year-old victim was not believed to be the intended target. "A 19-year-old woman, in the prime of her life, who was simply going out for a night out with friends, has had her life taken from her, in the most cowardly way," Galpin stated. "We have not stopped and we will not stop until these people are identified and taken into custody."
Galpin also noted that Ms. Schuster-Togiatau's family is receiving support from the police during this difficult time. "They are not doing well. It's an incredibly difficult time for them. I can't imagine the hurt they're going through," he said.
As of Saturday afternoon, no arrests had been made. A separate fundraiser has been initiated for Ms. Schuster-Togiatau's family to support them through their grief.
