Sister of Murdered Couple Reveals Devastating Moment She Learned of Their Deaths
Martine Singer recounts the harrowing drive to her sister Michele and brother-in-law Rob Reiner's estate after their discovery.
Martine Singer, sister of Michele Reiner and sister-in-law of Rob Reiner, has shared the profound shock and grief she experienced upon learning of their murders. Michele and Rob Reiner were found stabbed to death on December 14, 2025, at their Brentwood estate, where their son Nick resided in the guesthouse.
Singer described how a relative informed her of the tragedy with a call stating, "Something terrible has happened and you gotta go over there." The journey to the Reiners' home, she recalled in an interview with ABC 7, felt like "probably the longest car ride in my life."
Nick Reiner, 32, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder. He has a history of substance abuse and was reportedly diagnosed with schizophrenia. He is currently being held in solitary confinement awaiting trial. Singer confirmed that she has had no communication with her nephew, and when asked about a potential outreach from him, she stated, "I appreciate the question. I'm not sure I can answer that."
Despite the immense personal loss, Singer has continued her work running a Los Angeles nonprofit called the Children's Institute. She explained that while the grief is a constant presence, she has been able to maintain functioning. "But it's always there. It's always in my mind and in my heart," Singer said, remembering her sister and brother-in-law as a "forcefield" of a couple. She described them as "charismatic. They were funny and loud and boisterous, and the world seems very empty without them."
Singer also shared memories and throwback photos with her sister Michele. The Reiners had three other children: Jake, 35, and Romy, 28. Rob Reiner also served as the adoptive father to Tracy, 62, the daughter of his first wife, Penny Marshall. Reports indicated that Romy, who lived across the street, may have been the one who discovered the bodies and alerted authorities to a "dangerous" family member who "should be a suspect."
Jake Reiner has expressed gratitude for Singer, stating she has "stepped into this maternal role for both Romy and myself like you wouldn't believe." Singer acknowledged the difficulty in filling the void left by her sister, saying, "I'll never be Michele. We're different people, and I can't fill that hole in their lives, but I'll do whatever I can to try and help them and support them and guide them if they want it."
In a separate interview with Extra, Singer reflected on the healing process. "I suppose you heal from a wound, but the scar is there. It's a really hard thing to describe because it never goes away." She added that her niece and nephew are healing in their own ways, and she views them as her own children with "no daylight between us."
Prior to the discovery of the bodies, Nick Reiner was reportedly seen in a heated argument with his parents at a Christmas party hosted by Conan O'Brien. Sources have indicated that Nick's mental state has deteriorated significantly in custody, making communication difficult for his legal team. He had limited visitors, with a relative reportedly meeting him in early September in the presence of his counsel. His initial high-profile defense attorney, Alan Jackson, withdrew from the case in January, citing circumstances beyond his and Nick's control, leading to his representation by public defender Kimberly Greene.
In September, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office announced that they would not be seeking the death penalty in the case.
