Sir Ranulph Fiennes's Wife Allows Visitors Amid Welfare Concerns

Explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes's wife, Louise Millington-Cotes, has begun allowing select friends and family members to visit him in a specialist dementia unit, following mounting concerns over his welfare. Ms. Millington-Cotes, 59, who had previously imposed strict limitations on visitors and is understood to have moved the 82-year-old explorer to the facility, is now permitting some visits. However, her son, Alex Millington-Cotes, 31, has reportedly been denied access, fueling fears that he may not see his stepfather again.

Several relatives and friends are reportedly considering pursuing a Court of Protection hearing to scrutinize whether Ms. Millington-Cotes is appropriately exercising her power of attorney. These concerns arise from previous claims that she transferred Sir Ranulph between multiple care homes and required visitors to sign non-disclosure agreements regarding his whereabouts. Despite these access restrictions, those who have managed to see Sir Ranulph report that he is receiving attentive care and spends his days with a dedicated carer.

Alex Millington-Cotes, who is estranged from his mother, has initiated a crowdfunding campaign for legal fees to 'locate and safeguard' the explorer, asserting that his mother's actions have been improper since the outset. Sir Ranulph, diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2019, is celebrated by Guinness World Records as 'the world's greatest living explorer' for achievements such as being the first person to reach both the North and South Poles by surface travel.

His public appearances have ceased since October 2024, when he appeared in a pre-recorded video at a Royal Geographical Society gala, apologizing for not being well enough to attend in person. Since then, many close associates have struggled to contact him, leading to increased worry about his well-being. A recent investigation highlighted that Sir Ranulph was moved between five different locations, including four care homes and a hotel, within a single year.

During one period, he resided for 49 days at a care facility in Wales. The owner of that facility informed the Daily Mail that Lady Fiennes failed to provide a medication list from a doctor and insisted Sir Ranulph remained under the care of his private London GP, rather than being registered locally. The owner also alleged that Lady Fiennes requested medication dose alterations without a written prescription, leaving the home without clinical oversight and no doctor seeing him during his stay. Although some friends and relatives are now aware of Sir Ranulph's current location, ongoing concerns about his care, access, and overall welfare persist among his closest circle.
