Sir Patrick Stewart Remembered as 'Mirfield's Finest' After Death at 86

Tributes have been paid to Sir Patrick Stewart, the acclaimed actor born in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, who died Wednesday at the age of 86.

Stewart, celebrated for his iconic roles in "Star Trek" as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and in the "X-Men" film series as Professor Charles Xavier, passed away at his home in Los Angeles. His death followed a struggle with Alzheimer's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia.

News of his passing prompted an outpouring of affection from his hometown community and from Huddersfield Town, the football club he supported since childhood. Kim Leadbeater, the Spen Valley MP, described Stewart as "Mirfield's finest," honoring him as "an outstanding talent and someone who came across as a thoroughly decent and lovely" individual.

Leadbeater recalled meeting Stewart at Huddersfield Town and maintaining correspondence, noting his kindness and stating he would be "greatly missed."

A devoted supporter of Huddersfield Town, Stewart attended matches when his schedule permitted. He celebrated the team's promotion to the Premier League at Wembley in 2017. The club shared a tribute on X, expressing deep sadness and sending condolences to his family. "A titan of his craft and a legend and hero to millions worldwide, his legacy will live on," the club stated, adding that Stewart, "Fiercely proud of his Yorkshire roots, Sir Patrick was a Terrier in every sense and we're proud to have counted him as one of our own."

Actor and close friend Sir Ian McKellen echoed the sentiment of Stewart's deep connection to his birthplace, remarking, "Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end."

Stewart's ability to balance global fame with his down-to-earth Yorkshire origins was frequently cited as a key element of his enduring appeal. Those who knew him spoke of his sense of humor. One anecdote shared involved Stewart and a colleague playfully serving meals as waiters at a university dinner.

The statement announcing Stewart's death, released via his Instagram account, concluded with a quote from his memoirs. It reflected on the unusual lives of both himself and his "Star Trek" character, Jean-Luc Picard, emphasizing their shared connection to their roots and the enduring call of home.
