Sir Ian McKellen's Historic London Pub Receives Approval for Balcony Repairs
The actor's 16th-century establishment, The Grapes, will undergo conservation-led repairs to its Thames-facing balcony and stairs.
Sir Ian McKellen has received official permission to carry out necessary repairs on a dilapidated balcony at his historic 16th-century pub, The Grapes, located in Limehouse, east London.
The actor, widely known for his role as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, purchased the Grade-II listed public house on Narrow Street approximately 15 years ago. The pub, which is situated adjacent to the River Thames near Canary Wharf, requires urgent work on its rear balcony, including repairs to its stairs and decking.
The application for the repairs was submitted to Tower Hamlets Council, detailing the need for "emergency repair works to rear elevation balcony including timber supports and repairs to existing foreshore access stairs." The proposed work emphasizes a "conservation-led repair strategy," aiming to utilize historic timber where possible to preserve the site's "maritime character."
A structural heritage assessment highlighted the pub's historical significance, noting that a tavern has existed on or near the site since the late 16th century, with the current structure largely dating from eighteenth-century rebuilding typical of riverside commercial properties. The building's construction primarily features load-bearing masonry walls supporting timber floor structures and a timber roof.
The assessment further explained that the existing timber elements have deteriorated due to prolonged exposure to the Thames environment, including moisture, salt-laden air, and weathering. These structures are crucial for circulation and serve as a secondary escape route from the building.
A spokesperson for Tower Hamlets Council confirmed that listed building consent had been granted for the proposed works, acknowledging the necessity of the repairs in accordance with relevant regulations.
Sir Ian McKellen, who is 87 years old, is a frequent visitor to The Grapes and has been known to participate in the pub's quiz nights.
