Single Mother Dies After Falling Through Gap in Kansas Bridge

A single mother of two was found dead at the bottom of a Kansas bridge, prompting an investigation into whether she fell through a gap in its decking. Monica Rivera, 24, was reported missing on Friday after she failed to return from her usual morning walk along the 7th Street bridge in Kansas City.

Her body was discovered later that morning in an industrial area beneath the bridge. Preliminary autopsy results indicated no evidence of foul play, leading authorities to theorize that Rivera may have accidentally slipped through an unsecured gap in the bridge's structure. "It kind of looks like it's one continuous deck… but there's actually a gap," police spokesperson Nancy Chartrand told The Kansas City Star, describing the incident as a "tragic accident."

Rivera's family believes her death resulted from a "safety oversight." Her aunt, Cassie Bennett, has initiated a Change.org petition, urging the city to address the apparent flaw in the bridge. Bennett stated that the city had not addressed the issue despite previous community concerns. "This fatal accident could have been avoided if the city had taken timely action to ensure the safety of its citizens," she said.

Rivera, from Wyandotte County, has been remembered by friends as having a "beautiful" soul. A vigil was held for her following the discovery of her death.
