Single Mother Details Devastation After Builder's $75 Million Collapse

A single mother of 11 has described her devastation after paying $405,000 in life savings to a collapsed builder, only to have no home and a substantial debt.

Beechwood Homes Group, under the direction of Vittorio Cavasinni, entered liquidation earlier this year, owing approximately $75.5 million to more than 400 creditors. The group operated eight companies across Sydney, Newcastle, and Wollongong.

Mr. Cavasinni attributed the company's failure to its operation as a fixed-price builder, which could not adjust to rising operational costs that began inflating in early 2020. He also cited personal "family tragedies" and his wife's health issues as distractions that impacted his ability to manage the business.

Virginia Fletcher, the single mother who paid the substantial sum, stated that construction on her home was due to begin by Christmas 2025 but never commenced. She has been left with no property and faces difficulties securing alternative housing for her large family. "I've got nothing to go to. Who will rent to someone with so many kids?" Fletcher told the Daily Telegraph. "I try to put on a brave face for my children, but I am not okay."

Fletcher had sold her previous home to cover approximately $143,000 in debt and expressed concern about affording a deposit for another property. She explained that her funds were paid into the company's operating account rather than being held in trust and were spent within 35 days. "Today, the only item I have to show for the $405,000 I paid is a single tap on my empty block of land," she said.

Sean Wengel and Michael Brereton of William Buck were appointed to oversee the liquidation of Beechwood Homes NSW in May. According to reports filed with ASIC, Mr. Cavasinni has not yet completed a director's report to aid the liquidators' investigation into the company's debts.

Worrells liquidators Graeme Beattie and Aaron Lucan were appointed to manage the other seven companies within the group, including Beechwood Homes Administration NSW, Beechwood Homes Constructions, and Beechwood Homes Australia. At the time of Beechwood Homes NSW's collapse, it had 38 projects under construction and 68 in the pre-construction phase.

Customers with unfinished homes have been offered the possibility of completing their construction through the Home Building Compensation Fund. Fletcher has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support her family and to serve as a warning to others. She stated, "I paid Beechwood Homes [Constructions] $405,000 in good faith, believing I was entering into a building contract and that my money would be protected."
