HBO's 'Lanterns' series introduced a major DC Comics villain, Sinestro, in the second episode, setting the stage for significant conflict within the narrative. The character, played by Ulrich Thomsen, makes his debut in a pivotal scene at an intergalactic prison.

Unraveling the Plot

Episode 2 of 'Lanterns' picks up with Green Lanterns Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) investigating a group of disguised aliens found in Rushville, Nebraska. Their inquiry takes a critical turn when Stewart is captured by aliens who reveal the presence of a Manhunter hiding within Rushville. The aliens threaten to detonate explosives in the town, endangering thousands of lives, unless the Manhunter is identified.

Stewart confides in Jordan about the Manhunter threat, a revelation that visibly startles Jordan, given the creature's supposed absence. The episode concludes with Jordan donning his Green Lantern suit and traveling to an interstellar facility where he confronts Sinestro.

Sinestro's Comic Book Origins

In the DC Comics lore, Thaal Sinestro originates from the planet Korugar and is a former member of the Green Lantern Corps. Created by John Broome and Gil Kane, Sinestro first appeared in Green Lantern (vol. 2) #7 in 1961. His backstory mirrors aspects of Hal Jordan's own journey, beginning with a Green Lantern crash-landing on his homeworld. Sinestro encountered the injured Lantern Prohl Gosgotha and used his ring to defend against an attacker, eventually leading to Gosgotha's death after Sinestro refused to return the ring. He then deceived the Guardians of the Universe, who oversee the Green Lantern Corps, to be recognized as the chosen wielder.

Sinestro became a highly respected Green Lantern, known for maintaining order in his sector through strict methods. This approach eventually escalated to him ruling Korugar as an autocratic dictator. Hal Jordan was later assigned as Sinestro's trainee. As Jordan became aware of Sinestro's authoritarian tactics, he reported him to the Guardians, leading to Sinestro's imprisonment. The series places Sinestro in a similar confinement on the Guardians' homeworld of Oa at the end of Episode 2.

Casting and Performance

Danish actor Ulrich Thomsen portrays Sinestro in the 'Lanterns' series. Thomsen, known for his roles in 'The Celebration' and 'Banshee,' has embraced the character's distinct appearance. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre commented on Thomsen's dedication to the role, noting that he was often in costume and makeup, including the character's signature red hue, from their initial meetings.

'Lanterns' Episode 3 is scheduled for release on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday, August 30.
