Silverfish Surge Linked to Home Moisture Issues, Experts Say
Experts advise homeowners to address dampness and improve ventilation as increased sightings of the insects may indicate underlying moisture problems.
Homeowners are reporting an increase in silverfish sightings, with experts attributing the surge to common household moisture issues. These small, wingless insects are drawn to warm, humid environments, frequently appearing in bathrooms, kitchens, and basements.
The presence of silverfish, while not harmful to humans, can serve as an indicator of dampness that requires attention. Chris Harvey, marketing director at heating specialist Stelrad, noted that finding these insects can prompt a necessary check of a home's conditions.
As temperatures decrease and condensation becomes more prevalent, conditions become more favorable for silverfish. Experts recommend tackling condensation, enhancing ventilation, and investigating any signs of persistent damp to deter these pests.
Managing Moisture
Simple steps can make homes less attractive to silverfish. Ensuring moisture can escape from bathrooms during and after showering is crucial. If an extractor fan is present, its run-on function should be utilized. If relying on a window, opening it during and after showering, when safe, can help expel moist air. Keeping the bathroom door closed during this process helps contain the steam, preventing it from spreading to other rooms.
A properly functioning bathroom radiator can also aid in drying damp walls and reducing excess moisture. Harvey emphasized that while a working radiator contributes to a comfortable temperature, it is not a replacement for ventilation. Issues like persistent cold spots or leaks should be addressed rather than simply increasing the radiator setting.
Additionally, drying towels properly is important. Spreading towels out to dry rather than leaving them in piles or layered on heated towel rails can help. Even with heated towel rails, ventilation remains essential as drying towels release moisture into the room.
Identifying and Addressing Damp
Regular sightings of silverfish may warrant a check of areas around sinks, toilets, baths, and showers for hidden moisture. Dripping pipes, damp patches, and water that fails to dry can create ideal conditions for these insects. Silverfish are often associated with ongoing damp problems, making it essential to address the source of excess moisture to prevent recurring infestations.
If an area remains wet even when not in use, it may require repair. Removing clutter, such as cardboard and old paperwork, from damp storage areas can also help, as silverfish are known to feed on paper-based materials and their adhesives. Experts advise seeking professional advice if the pests continue to be a problem.
