Sienna Miller's New Drama 'War' Echoes Public Heartbreak
The actress's performance in Sky's divorce thriller is drawing comparisons to her own past struggles with fame and infidelity.
Sienna Miller is earning critical acclaim for her role in the new Sky drama "War," a series that explores the tumultuous unraveling of a celebrity marriage. The show's exploration of high-profile divorce and public scrutiny bears a striking resemblance to Miller's own past experiences, particularly her deeply publicized split from actor Jude Law in the mid-2000s.
In "War," Miller portrays Carla Duval, a Hollywood A-lister whose marriage to a tech billionaire implodes after infidelity. The storyline, crafted by screenwriter George Kay, has drawn parallels to Miller's own heartbreak nearly two decades ago when Law was exposed for an affair with their children's nanny. Their romance, which began on the set of "Alfie" in 2004 and led to an engagement, publicly unraveled soon after, despite attempts to reconcile. The relationship ultimately ended for good in 2011.
Critics have lauded Miller's performance, with some comparing "War" to "Succession." The New York Times described her portrayal as "deeply charismatic, complicated and sympathetic," while Variety noted that both she and co-star Dominic West "shine" in the "captivating divorce thriller."
Art Imitating Life
Robert Dupont, producer of the 2006 film "Factory Girl," in which Miller starred as Edie Sedgwick, commented on the resonance between Miller's past and her current role. "We filmed Factory Girl while all the drama was going on with Jude Law," Dupont told The Mail on Sunday. "I’m not surprised Sienna is getting great reviews because it’s very much art imitating life. When Jude cheated on her it caused a tabloid sensation. But to her credit it never affected her performance. She was always professional on set. But privately she must have been going through hell."
Dupont recalled the intense media scrutiny Miller faced during that period, describing how she had to be discreetly transported to and from film sets and events. "She was on the cover of Vogue and other fashion magazines but also on the cover of every tabloid on both sides of the Atlantic," he said, adding, "I’m glad she’s finally getting to use that negative experience to create something positive."
Miller herself has spoken about the profound impact of the Law scandal. She described filming Shakespeare's "As You Like It" shortly after the breakup, with Dominic West as her co-star, as one of the most challenging periods of her life. "With that level of public heartbreak, to have to get out of bed, let alone stand in front of 800 people every night, it’s just the last thing you want to do," she told The Daily Beast. She characterized the experience as surreal and deeply traumatizing due to the relentless paparazzi attention, which she felt made her "go mad."
A Different Chapter
Now, Miller appears to have found a more stable personal life. She is engaged to actor and model Oli Green, who is 15 years her junior. The couple resides in London with their two young children, alongside Miller's 14-year-old daughter, Marlowe, from her previous relationship with actor Tom Sturridge.
Marlowe's appearance on the red carpet with Miller for the "War" premiere gained significant social media attention due to her resemblance to her mother. Miller later expressed regret over the focus on her daughter's appearance, emphasizing Marlowe's intelligence and humor.
Dominic West, Miller's "War" co-star, has also navigated public marital challenges. He faced allegations of an affair with Lily James in 2020, which he and his wife, Catherine FitzGerald, addressed publicly. West has described the period as "deeply stressful" but noted that he and his wife sometimes joke about the intense media coverage.
The premise of "War" was inspired by creator George Kay's observation of a woman celebrating the end of a protracted and financially significant divorce. London's reputation as a hub for high-net-worth divorces, partly due to its legal framework favoring spousal equality, also informed the setting. The drama incorporates elements like divorce papers being served publicly, mirroring an incident involving Olivia Wilde at a 2022 industry event.
"War" premiered on Sky on Friday, with its lead actress finding a measure of peace, seemingly channeling past turmoil into a celebrated on-screen performance.
