Annuchka Bowden and her brother Mark have launched Drivher Dreams, a service designed to simplify the car buying process and address the anxiety many women experience when making this significant purchase. Bowden recognized the challenge after her own positive car-buying experience, facilitated by her mechanic brother, highlighted how fortunate she was to have expert assistance.
Drivher Dreams aims to provide women with expert guidance, akin to having a trusted mechanic in the family. The service was born from conversations between Bowden and her brother, who frequently encountered women who had purchased vehicles only to discover costly issues shortly thereafter. "Basically we’re just trying to make car sourcing and getting a good car easy," Bowden explained.
According to Bowden, her brother noted that a majority of these post-purchase car problems occurred with vehicles bought by women. These issues could often have been identified and addressed before the sale. "The car just should not have been sold like that," she stated, recounting one instance where a vehicle was sold with problems that would have cost €3,000 to repair.
The car buying process is second only to purchasing a home in terms of financial commitment. Drivher Dreams seeks to make this experience less daunting and more transparent. Bowden acknowledged the fear among women that a lack of automotive knowledge can lead to exploitation or overcharging. She emphasized her brother Mark's honesty, noting that he would advise against unnecessary repairs.
How Drivher Dreams Works
The service begins with a consultation to understand the client's needs and budget. Drivher Dreams then sources potential vehicles, providing clients with options that fit their requirements. If a client expresses specific preferences, the team works to find that exact model or similar alternatives. For more open-minded clients, they present three to four suitable options. A video walkthrough of the car is provided, and if approved, Mark personally inspects the vehicle. After a final service and verification, the car is handed over to the client. The service costs €250 and includes a six-month warranty. The fee is refundable within the first 30 days.
Drivher Dreams prioritizes sourcing vehicles from reputable traders within the motor industry, adding an extra layer of security. "We will not suggest any car that they wouldn’t be happy to buy themselves," Bowden stated. Their goal is to make the process feel "easy, safe, transparent and simple."
While Bowden admits that a better understanding of cars would be beneficial for women, she aims to empower them by demystifying the process. "A lot of the fear surrounding it as well is maybe just in asking the questions, I think a lot of the time it’s people making others feel stupid for asking them," she said. The siblings utilize social media and videos to explain basic car maintenance and terminology in accessible terms.
Bowden described her working relationship with her brother as strong, built on mutual trust in each other's expertise and honesty. "We both know what we’re good at, and we both trust each other," she stated.
Looking ahead, Drivher Dreams hopes to expand its model. Bowden is keen to understand client feedback to potentially adapt the service. "We definitely would like, looking forward, to grow it and to change the way of buying cars," she said. They aim to differentiate themselves from traditional garages by focusing on finding a car that fits the client, rather than selling a car the garage already has.
The siblings are actively using social media to promote their business, which is a new venture for both of them. Bowden acknowledged the initial intimidation of putting themselves out there online but sees it as crucial for building authenticity and trust with clients who cannot meet in person. "When people can see your face, it does add that bit of authenticity," she remarked.
Ultimately, Drivher Dreams' mission is to make car buying a positive and empowering experience. "It’s supposed to be a new nice thing outside your house, and you spent good money, hard-earned money. The last thing you would be worrying about is whether it’s going to cause issues," Bowden concluded. More information can be found at drivherdreams.ie.
