A shopkeeper from south London has been immortalized in a portrait by a royal artist as part of a project to highlight the significance of independent businesses within local communities. Kaual Patel, owner of Torridon Convenience Store in Catford, was depicted by artist Nick Bashall, known for his portraits of Princess Anne.
The portrait of Patel is featured in a new exhibition titled 'Local Royalty,' which showcases paintings by artists who typically create works for the Royal Family, but are now focusing on owners of pubs, cafes, and takeaway establishments. This initiative was prompted by research indicating that nearly 80% of the public feel that independent businesses are undervalued.
Patel, who inherited the shop from his father and uncle two decades ago, has transformed it into a community hub and a platform for local producers. He described the experience of being painted in his shop as unforgettable, particularly witnessing the reactions of his customers. "This wasn't created behind closed doors in a studio," Patel stated. "It happened right here, in the store, surrounded by the people who make our community so special. Seeing their expressions, hearing their reactions and watching the portrait come to life alongside them created memories I'll never forget. This simply doesn't happen to an everyday shopkeeper."
Bashall noted the unique atmosphere during the painting process, with customers entering the shop and observing the unfolding artwork. "I stood at my easel and painted Kaual and the entire background on the spot, with people milling around us. It was great fun watching his customers' faces as they came in, clearly wondering what was going on, but also intrigued by it all."
The 'Local Royalty' exhibition, supported by Coca-Cola GB, will be on display at the Saatchi Gallery in London from October 28 to November 2.
