Five individuals sustained gunshot wounds, with one in critical condition, during a shooting incident at Virginia State University early Saturday morning. The university confirmed that multiple suspects were involved in the event, which occurred outside residence halls around 1:28 a.m. local time.

Emergency services responded to the scene, and all five injured individuals were transported to local hospitals. Four of the victims are reported to have non-life-threatening injuries. It remains unclear if any arrests have been made, and local police are leading the investigation with assistance from campus police and other law enforcement agencies.

A temporary lockdown of the campus has since been lifted, though a substantial law enforcement presence remains on site. Virginia State University, located approximately 20 miles south of Richmond, is a historically black college and university with an enrollment of about 5,000 students. The incident occurred just before the start of the fall term, with classes scheduled to begin on Monday and dormitories having opened for returning students on Friday.
