A Shetland pony led San Jose police on an unusual chase Friday through the California city before officers were able to safely apprehend the animal. The San Jose Police Department shared video footage of the pursuit, showing the small, brown pony with a distinct white mane trotting down a street.

The Pursuit

Video captured from inside a police vehicle showed the pony moving at a notable pace. In a subsequent social media post, officers were seen approaching the pony in a grassy field. The animal, which stood about waist-high to an officer, appeared calm as it was cautiously approached. Another image showed three smiling officers posing with the pony on a residential street.

Authorities located the pony wandering in a neighborhood and were able to reunite it with its owner, who reported the animal had escaped the previous night. Police stated the owner was “quite relieved” to have their pet back. The department quipped on social media, “We are glad this little adventure seeker is back home safe and done hoofin' around.” It was not immediately clear where in San Jose, California's third-largest city by population, the pony was returned.

About Shetland Ponies

Shetland ponies are one of the oldest and smallest horse breeds, typically standing less than 46 inches tall and weighing around 400 pounds. They are known for being docile and are often considered suitable companions for children. According to the US Equestrian Federation, they are generally easy to care for, requiring a quality diet, a clean environment, and regular grooming. These ponies usually have a lifespan of 20 to 30 years. The San Jose Police Department did not provide further details regarding the owner or the circumstances of the escape.
