Shesterkin's Injury Casts Shadow Over Rangers' Season After Loss to Capitals
The New York Rangers face significant uncertainty as their star goaltender Igor Shesterkin's injury potentially sidelines him, impacting the team's early-season momentum.
The New York Rangers are facing a challenging road ahead after their star goaltender, Igor Shesterkin, sustained an injury during the second period of Friday night's 3-1 loss to the Capitals. The potential long-term absence of Shesterkin, widely considered the NHL's top goaltender, casts a significant shadow over the team's prospects.
Shesterkin had been instrumental in the Rangers' strong start to the season, backing the team in three of their first four games. During this period, he recorded 88 saves on 95 shots, achieving a .926 save percentage. Beyond his saves, Shesterkin also contributed offensively with the Rangers' first-ever goalie goal and an assist, while his enhanced role as a facilitator on the backend has been noted this season.
Injury Incident
The injury occurred during a Capitals power play in the second period. Shesterkin ventured out of his crease to challenge Capitals forward Pierre-Luc Dubois. Although Dubois lost the puck, Shesterkin's attempt to return to the net resulted in him sliding his right leg hard into the goalpost. The leg appeared to bend awkwardly, causing Shesterkin to fall to the ice in apparent pain, slamming his glove down. A Rangers trainer attended to him on the ice, and Shesterkin had to be helped off without putting weight on his right leg.
Goaltending Depth Tested
The injury exacerbates the Rangers' existing goaltending concerns. Joonas Korpisalo is already on injured reserve with a lower-body injury sustained early in the season and has yet to play. Korpisalo was expected to serve as Shesterkin's backup. As a result, rookie Dylan Garand was recalled and has now been thrust into a more prominent role. Garand stopped 11 of 12 shots in relief during Friday's game, marking his fifth career NHL appearance.
With Spencer Martin also sidelined with a day-to-day lower-body injury, the Rangers may need to look further down their depth chart. Callum Tung, who has limited AHL experience, could potentially serve as the backup goaltender for Sunday's game at Madison Square Garden.
Game Recap
Prior to Shesterkin's departure, the Rangers had capitalized on special teams to take a 1-0 lead in the first period. Their top power-play unit, which had struggled early in the season, converted on their second opportunity when Alexis Lafrenière scored his fourth goal in two games. The penalty kill also performed well, limiting the Capitals to two shots on goal during their first man-advantage.
However, the tide turned after Beaudoin took a penalty for the second consecutive game. Late in the second period, he turned over the puck, leading to Boone Jenner's first goal with the Capitals, which proved to be the game-winner. The Capitals added another goal in the third period to secure the 3-1 victory.
