Sherrod Brown Declares Opposition to Trump Impeachment if He Returns to Senate
The Ohio Democrat stated he would not support impeaching former President Donald Trump, regardless of the midterm election outcome.
Former Sen. Sherrod Brown, currently seeking to reclaim a U.S. Senate seat in Ohio, has stated he would not support impeaching President Donald Trump if Democrats regain a majority in the House and initiate impeachment proceedings. Brown, who previously served in the Senate from early 2007 until early 2025, lost his 2024 re-election bid to Republican Bernie Moreno.
In an interview with The Columbus Dispatch on Oct. 9, Brown stated, "I can't speak for everybody else, but I would not support an impeachment of Trump. There's just simply no reason for that, no matter what happens in the midterms." He is currently challenging Republican incumbent Jon Husted in Ohio's special U.S. Senate election.
During Trump's first term, Brown voted to convict the president following both House impeachment efforts. However, neither vote reached the necessary threshold for conviction in the Senate. The Senate's vote on the second impeachment effort occurred after Trump had already left office.
A spokesperson for Husted's campaign criticized Brown's stance, stating, "Sherrod Brown sided with his party twice to impeach President Trump during his first term. Now he's masquerading as a moderate, despite a career aligning himself with Bernie Sanders and AOC. Don't be fooled; when radical Democrats call, Brown always toes the line."
While Trump has endorsed Husted, former President Barack Obama is backing Brown in the race. Gov. Mike DeWine appointed Husted to fill the Senate seat vacated by JD Vance, who stepped down to prepare for his role as vice president.
