Sheffield Wednesday legend David Hirst has returned to Hillsborough Stadium, his former stomping ground, to open a new bar named in his honor. Hirst, who scored 149 goals for the club over 11 years from 1986, expressed his pleasure at being back, stating, "I wasn't welcome here but it's great to be back." The bar offers fans the chance to enjoy pints and pies while mingling with the club's former star.
Hirst's return signifies a shift at the club under new American ownership. He believes the current management, led by David Storch, is fostering a more "Sheffield centric" environment. This comes after a challenging decade under previous owner Dejphon Chansiri, during which Hirst had a falling out and walked away from the club in 2018 following a contract dispute related to his son, George.
Storch is reportedly working to rebuild Sheffield Wednesday, who are currently at the top of League One. The club has made significant recruitment efforts, including signing 18 new players and bringing back Barry Bannan. The new bar at Hillsborough features a casual corporate atmosphere, with a focus on traditional fare like pies and ale, and aims to enhance fan engagement.
Hirst's invitation to dinner and subsequent discussions with Storch marked his reintegration into the club's environment. His presence in the new bar, mingling with supporters, highlights his renewed connection with the club and its fanbase.
Hirst, now 40 years on from joining the Owls, feels the club is in a better place under the new ownership.
