Sheffield is set to offer free sports sessions across more than a dozen parks and green spaces during the upcoming school summer holidays. The initiative is designed to "get families active" and provide an affordable option for recreation during a time when families may not be able to afford traditional holidays.

The two-hour sessions will take place in various locations throughout the city, including Firth Park, Greenhill Park, and Gleadless Common. Activities planned include football, rounders, and multi-sport sessions, with an emphasis on family-friendly games suitable for all ages and abilities. Free food and drink will also be available at the events.

Everyone Active, a company contracted by Sheffield City Council to manage leisure, health, and wellbeing facilities, will be leading the program. Lorenzo Clark, representing Everyone Active, highlighted the scheme's role in supporting families facing financial constraints. "The scheme provides activities for those who might not necessarily be able to go away on holiday because of affordability," Clark stated. He added that expert coaches will be present to guide participants in trying new sports or engaging in familiar ones.

Councillor Brian Holmshaw, chair of the council's communities, parks and leisure policy committee, commented on the program's benefits for children and parents. "These activities are perfect for getting families out and about across the city, getting them active and having lots of fun, hopefully in the sun," Holmshaw said.

The summer activity sessions are scheduled to run from July 20 to August 28. Advance booking is recommended. Everyone Active manages several key facilities in Sheffield, such as the English Institute of Sport, Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, and Ice Sheffield.
