Sheffield Council Increases Crisis Payments Amidst Rising Cost of Living

Sheffield City Council has increased payments from its crisis and resilience fund by £30 to support households experiencing severe financial difficulties. Single-person households that qualify will now receive a one-off payment of £95, up from £65.

For larger households, the payment amounts have also been adjusted. Two-person households can now apply for £110, while homes with three or four people are eligible for £120. Households with five or more people can receive a payment of £130 if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Councillor Elle Dodd, chair of the authority's finance and performance policy committee, stated that life has become "difficult and expensive" for a significant number of Sheffield residents. The crisis fund is intended to help individuals and families cover the cost of essential items such as food, toiletries, and utility bills, according to the council's website.

This increase follows a cost-of-living review conducted by the committee. The review revealed that nearly 50,000 households in Sheffield are struggling to make ends meet and are unable to pay their bills. Since April, the council has already issued approximately 7,000 crisis grants, totaling nearly £600,000.

Dodd emphasized the human element behind the statistics, noting that individuals often face "impossible decisions" and significant stress. The council's commitment, she added, is to address the underlying causes of poverty and to offer immediate assistance to those in need, keeping the issues of poverty and the cost of living a priority on the council's agenda.
