Shedeur Sanders Expresses Desire for Greater Understanding Amidst Public Perception

Cleveland Browns backup quarterback Shedeur Sanders has voiced a desire for a deeper understanding of his character, indicating a disconnect between public perception and his personal reality.

"I wish people understood me more as a human being," Sanders told Cosmopolitan in a recent interview. "I don’t think a lot of people really know me. I’m just now starting to understand that. You hear a lot of things online, but every encounter I have in person, people end up saying, ‘Oh, wow, he’s actually a great guy.’ Why would you think I’m a bad guy?"

Sanders, who is currently backing up starter Deshaun Watson for the Browns this season, reflected on his journey and the public's view of him. He noted his surprise at negative perceptions, especially given positive interactions he experiences in person. "So I’ve been looking at things a lot more lately, like, ‘Why would people think this?’ It’s not something I’m going to put [only] on myself, but I do want to fix that. I want to connect with more people, so they can meet me and see the truth."

Sanders joined the Browns as a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after a notable college career at Colorado, where he played under his father. During his rookie season, he appeared in eight games, starting seven, and recorded 1,400 passing yards with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. This was during a season where Watson was sidelined for the entire year due to an Achilles injury.

In the current season, with the Browns starting at 3-1 under first-year coach Todd Monken, Sanders has only thrown one pass. Watson has maintained the starting role, posting a passer rating of 101.2 with six touchdowns and two interceptions. The Browns also have fellow 2025 draft pick Dillon Gabriel on injured reserve with a back injury. Gabriel is eligible to return to practice and is expected to compete with Sanders for the backup position behind Watson ahead of the Nov. 10 trade deadline.
