Former Republic of Ireland and Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given has married his fiancée, Rebecca Gibson, in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey after a 12-year engagement. The couple exchanged vows on Saturday.

Westminster Abbey typically hosts weddings for those with a direct connection to the Royal Family, the Order of the Bath, or residents of the Abbey precincts. Exceptions can be made for individuals meeting specific criteria, subject to the Abbey's discretion and approval from the Royal Family and the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Gibson's eligibility stemmed from her grandfather, Donald Buttress OBE, who served as Surveyor of the Fabric of Westminster Abbey for 11 years and held connections to the Royal Family, including receiving a Lieutenant of the Victorian Order (LVO) and an OBE for services to cathedral conservation. Buttress also designed the Queen Mother Memorial on The Mall. Gibson spent part of her childhood visiting her grandparents at the Abbey.

Given, 50, and Gibson, who met while she was working in public relations, were supported by their daughters on their special day. Gracie and Cassie served as bridesmaids, alongside Sienna, Given's daughter from his first marriage to Jane Cunningham. The couple also have a son, Shayne.

Given wore a tuxedo for the occasion, while Gibson donned an elegant dress designed by New York-based Tom Sebastien. The celebration continued with an after-party at Hotel Cafe Royal.

Given is widely recognized as one of Ireland's greatest goalkeepers, with a distinguished playing career in the Premier League for clubs including Newcastle United, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Stoke City, and Blackburn Rovers, accumulating 451 appearances. Since retiring from playing, he has worked as a football pundit for BBC Sport.
