Shawn Hatosy, now an Emmy-nominated actor for his role as Dr. Jack Abbot in "The Pitt," described a challenging period in his career prior to landing the part. After his long-running series "Animal Kingdom" concluded in the summer of 2022, Hatosy experienced a significant slowdown in work opportunities.
"It didn’t come that easily for me," Hatosy said. "I was fighting for a lot of roles and just not getting anywhere." The situation intensified in the following year with the dual Hollywood strikes, which halted production and left many actors, including Hatosy, searching for new projects. He recalled submitting dozens of self-tapes that ultimately yielded no results, a process he described as emotionally taxing.
"It seems [so easy to be] like, ‘Oh, hey, just put this on tape.’ But for an actor, it’s like a production," Hatosy explained. "We have to cast it, light it, do the sound, do the hair and makeup, put the wardrobe on, find somebody to do it with us."
Facing dwindling opportunities, Hatosy admitted to reaching a "low point" and feeling "pretty depressed." His wife, Kelly Albanese, encouraged him to return to acting classes, a suggestion he found instrumental in reconnecting with his passion for the craft. "Going back to an acting class, it’s like going to the gym. You’re getting feedback. You’re getting a collaborative feel to something that you have been doing for a long time," he said.
Breakthrough Role in "The Pitt"
Following the strikes, as new television projects began to emerge, Hatosy learned about "The Pitt," a medical drama filming in Los Angeles. Executive producer John Wells, with whom Hatosy had previously collaborated on shows like "Southland" and "ER," brought the role of Dr. Abbot to his attention. Initially, Hatosy's team was hesitant due to the character's limited initial screen time, but Hatosy decided to pursue the opportunity.
"Whatever John wants to do, I’m in," Hatosy said of Wells. "I blindly accept that it could have just been two episodes," he noted about his initial understanding of the character's arc. However, the role of Dr. Abbot quickly evolved, becoming a fan favorite known for his calm presence amidst the chaos of the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.
The show's portrayal of emergency medicine within a challenging healthcare system has resonated with both audiences and critics. Hatosy highlighted the series' potential to impact perspectives on healthcare professionals and the system itself.
"I think that a television show that can change people’s perspective on a fragile healthcare system and the people that are doing it daily — that’s like the trifecta," he stated.
Emmy Recognition and Character Depth
Hatosy's portrayal of Dr. Abbot, a widowed former combat medic with a prosthetic leg, has earned him significant acclaim, including his second Emmy nomination. He is now competing in the supporting drama actor category. The actor expressed his gratitude for the recognition, particularly given the character's initially limited presence.
"To go from guest to supporting in two years, it’s an amazing achievement for this character in the way that he was written," Hatosy remarked. He noted that Abbot's complexity, including his hidden trauma and his role as a confidant to Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle), offers substantial depth for exploration.
