Sharon Stone Reflects on Career Impact After Stroke, Recreates Iconic "Basic Instinct" Scene
The 68-year-old actress discussed her health setbacks and career challenges in an interview with ELLE Spain, while also posing for a magazine shoot reminiscent of her famous 1992 film role.
Actress Sharon Stone, 68, has recreated a scene evoking her iconic role in the 1992 film "Basic Instinct" for a recent magazine photoshoot. The accompanying interview with ELLE Spain for its 40th anniversary issue provided Stone an opportunity to reflect on her career, including the significant impact her health struggles had on her professional life.
One striking image from the shoot features Stone posing in a green trench coat, a visual nod to her character Catherine Tramell in "Basic Instinct." The film's memorable interrogation scene, where her character famously uncrosses and recrosses her legs while questioned by police, became a pivotal and controversial moment in cinematic history.
Stone has previously stated that she felt misled about the extent to which her performance would be shown in the "Basic Instinct" scene. In her memoir, "The Beauty of Living Twice," she detailed a confrontation with director Paul Verhoeven, asserting that his assurances about not showing certain elements were untrue. Verhoeven, however, has disputed this account, stating that any actress would be aware of the implications of such a scene and camera direction.
Despite past controversies, Stone has expressed no regrets about the film, likening them to "farts" that cannot be retrieved once released.
In the recent interview, Stone spoke candidly about the downturn in her career following a stroke and brain hemorrhage approximately 25 years ago. She explained that the offers for acting roles "dried up" after she underwent extensive rehabilitation, which included relearning to walk, talk, and read. "At that time, if you were a woman and something happened to you, you were finished," she recalled, highlighting the challenges faced by women with invisible disabilities in the industry. Stone also noted a societal tendency to perceive women perceived as both beautiful and intelligent in a narrow way, making it difficult for others to understand her as a "fragile artist."
Despite these past difficulties, Stone has seen a resurgence in her career. She has two films slated for release, is concluding an exhibition in Prague, and recently portrayed a powerful Hollywood executive in the television series "Euphoria." She had previously disclosed losing a significant portion of her savings during her recovery from the 2001 stroke.
