Shark Knocks Kayaker into Ocean Off California Coast
A fisherman was forced to swim ashore after a shark struck his kayak about a mile offshore.

A fisherman in California had a terrifying encounter with a shark that knocked him from his kayak and into the ocean approximately one mile off the coast. The incident occurred near Leffingwell Landing in San Luis Obispo County on Monday.
Authorities reported that the kayaker felt a strong impact from beneath his boat, which caused him to fall into the water. Although he managed to climb back onto his kayak, punctures to the hull caused it to take on water. This left him with no choice but to swim the remaining distance to shore.
The fisherman was unharmed by the encounter. Fire officials dispatched a boat to the scene, where they recovered the damaged kayak, fishing gear, and personal belongings.
Dr. Chris Lowe of the California State University Long Beach (CSULB) Shark Lab reviewed images of the damaged kayak and stated that it was plausible the vessel had been struck by a shark. Officials from the Cambria Fire Department have advised the public to exercise increased caution in the area, remain aware of their surroundings, and avoid entering the water if shark activity is visible.
This incident follows recent warnings issued to swimmers and surfers in Pacific Grove regarding shark activity near Lovers Point Beach. Those advisories were put in place out of an abundance of caution after a seal was reportedly bitten in the area, resulting in blood in the water.
